2025 AM Volume 37, Issue 4 _ Asia Pacific University
Asia Pacific University was not designed as a building but as a campus ecosystem defined by a central spine.
Our recent feature in AM Magazine dissects the architectural logic behind the APU campus.
The primary challenge was integrating a high-density institutional programme into a cohesive, pedestrian-centric environment. We achieved this through the implementation of a multi-level ‘Spine’ that serves as the primary circulation artery, connecting all teaching facilities, the library, and residential blocks.
The project is anchored by an iconic floating roof, a complex geometric form that provides both a unified visual identity and essential solar shading for the podium levels. By elevating the ‘grade’ level six meters above the ground, we reclaimed the podium as a social landscape, utilizing a distinctive stair and ramp configuration at the entrance to facilitate both access and student interaction.
This feature in AM Magazine highlights how strong technical and design knowledge in the field of education can be leveraged to foster a thriving academic community, with a focus on sustainability.
